I thought I was doing everything right when it came to skincare. Most of people are easy to make skincare mistakes in your 20s like i was.

In my early 20s, I followed every trend. I bought every influencer-approved serum. I believed that a longer routine meant better skin. My bathroom cabinet looked like a mini Sephora. But looking back now, I realize most of what I did wasn’t just unnecessary—it was damaging.

Today, I will discuss the biggest skincare mistakes in your 20s. One mistake nearly wrecked my skin barrier. And more importantly, how I fixed it.

Your 20s are often when skincare becomes more than just face wash and lip balm. It’s the time you start experimenting, often with little knowledge. It’s also when the choices you make begin to leave long-term effects—sunspots, sensitivity, early fine lines.

For me, my biggest mistake was over-exfoliating. I thought if my skin wasn’t glowing, I wasn’t doing enough. Spoiler: I was doing way too much.

I used chemical peels twice a week, physical scrubs in between, and thought a little stinging meant it was working. But instead, I ended up with red, flaky, overly sensitive skin that reacted to even water.

What I do now: I exfoliate once a week—sometimes even less. I switched to gentler ingredients like PHA or enzyme exfoliants when I need them.

I believed sunscreen was only for sunny days or beach trips. I didn’t realize that UV damage happens every single day, and it accumulates.

What I do now: Daily SPF, rain or shine. Even indoors, because I sit near windows all day.

Vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night, AHAs twice a week—my skin was overwhelmed. There was no consistency, and I never gave my skin a chance to adapt.

What I do now: I keep actives minimal and consistent. I choose one or two goals (hydration + barrier repair), and everything supports that.

If I didn’t see results in a week, I gave up. My skin never had time to adjust, so I mistook purging for irritation and vice versa.

What I do now: I use the 4-week rule. Unless I’m reacting, I give every product a full month before deciding.

I bought what was trending, not what I needed. Cute packaging and TikTok buzz led me to products loaded with fragrance or harsh alcohols.

What I do now: I read ingredient lists. I look for calming, fragrance-free formulas that target my actual needs, not what’s popular.


At one point, my skin was constantly burning. No matter what I applied, it felt like fire. Even my holy grail moisturizer made things worse. That’s when I learned what a damaged barrier feels like.

I had overdone it with actives, exfoliants, and even cleansing. My skin was raw.

It took a full six weeks, but my skin finally calmed down.

  • AM: Gentle cleanser, hydrating toner, barrier cream, SPF.
  • PM: Rinse only or gentle cleanser, same toner and cream.

Once a week, I might add a soothing mask or a drop of face oil. That’s it.

I don’t chase trends anymore. I listen to what my skin is actually asking for.

  • Sunscreen is more important than any serum.
  • Redness isn’t always a good sign.
  • You don’t need a 10-step routine to have great skin.
  • The goal is consistency, not perfection.
  • Less truly is more.
