I Adjust My Skincare Based on Weather — It Changed Everything

By Luna Jade – a Korean beauty analyst +10 years, who tests weather-based skincare routines across Korea’s four seasons to find what truly works for real skin.

For the longest time, I believed my skincare routine was “set.” Adapting it based on weather conditions was not something I considered, but the concept of weather-based skincare is becoming more popular.

But no matter how expensive the products were or how strictly I followed the steps…
My skin was still moody — oily some days, tight the next, and unpredictably bumpy.

It didn’t click until I realized:
My skincare wasn’t the problem. The weather was.

Now? I no longer fight with my skin.
Because I adjust my skincare routine based on the weather, not just my skin type.

Here’s what changed — and why it made all the difference.

I live in Korea where summer means 90% humidity, and winter? Dry indoor heating that feels like a desert.

My skin would:

  • Get super oily in July, no matter how much I “hydrated”
  • Flake around my nose and mouth in January
  • Randomly break out during season changes
  • Feel tight even after layers of toner

I blamed hormones. Products. Stress.
But then I realized… I never changed my routine.
I was using the same thick moisturizer in August that I used in December.

That didn’t make sense.

I started tracking:

  • Weather: temperature, humidity, wind
  • My skin’s behavior: oiliness, redness, dryness, breakouts

And patterns started to show up:

WeatherSkin ReactionMistake I Made
Hot & humidGreasy, congestedToo many layers + rich cream
Cold & dryTight, flaky, redLight lotion only, no barrier support
WindyRed patches, irritationNo calming ingredients, no protection
Rainy daysBreakoutsSkipping proper cleansing

It wasn’t my skin that was unstable — it was my routine that didn’t adapt.

What I Did Wrong:

  • Used cream moisturizer made for winter
  • Layered hydrating toner + essence + serum every morning
  • Reapplied heavy sunscreen → clogged pores
  • Thought oil = dehydration → added more layers

What I Changed:

  • Switched to gel moisturizer
  • Used a lightweight soothing toner with green tea
  • Picked matte-finish SPF with sebum control
  • Introduced blotting pads midday instead of powder

Biodance Sea Kelp Pads: My go-to for cooling down skin fast.

Biodance Sea Kelp Gel Toner Pads review – cooling toner pads for oily and combination skin Available on Amazon

On hot, sticky mornings, I grab these sea kelp gel pads from Biodance. They’re instantly cooling and never leave a sticky layer.

What I Did Wrong:

  • Stuck to summer gel moisturizers → skin got drier
  • Skipped oil-based cleanser thinking it would “strip”
  • Didn’t seal in hydration after toner

What I Changed:

  • Switched to cream with ceramides + panthenol
  • Added a face oil 2–3x/week
  • Used a humidifier indoors at night
  • Reduced exfoliation to once every 10–14 days

Result? No more cracked smile lines or itchy cheeks.

Spring and fall used to be the worst.
Unstable temperatures = breakouts, random peeling, dull skin.

Focus on barrier repair after weather changes

Alternate between gel and cream moisturizers

Use calming ingredients: cica, madecassoside, beta-glucan

Patch test new seasonal products before committing

I now keep my shelf like a capsule wardrobe:

CategoryHumid WeatherDry Weather
CleanserLow-pH foamCreamy cleanser
TonerLightweight, wateryViscous, hydrating
MoisturizerGel creamDeep cream with ceramides
Add-onsClay mask, sebum padOil, balm

It’s not about owning more products,
It’s about knowing when to rotate the ones you already have.

  1. Skin = an organ → responds to external environment
  2. Humidity affects evaporation rate of water from skin
  3. Cold dries your barrier → need occlusive care
  4. Heat increases sebum → lightweight textures are key
  5. Your skin’s needs today ≠ its needs next month

Stop blaming your skin — adjust your care instead

Check the weather — humidity and temp matter!

Build a mini skincare menu by season

Introduce new products gradually each time climate changes

My skin isn’t complicated.

It’s just reactive — like all skin is.
It doesn’t need more products.
It needs the right ones, at the right time.

Since I started adjusting my skincare with the weather,
I’ve stopped chasing trends, stopped blaming hormones,
and finally started enjoying how my skin feels.

You don’t need new skin.
Just a better way to care for it — day by day, season by season.

If you’re curious about how I fixed my sleep-deprived skin, this might help.
